Originally from Morocco, Date fruits grow in clusters on the Date palm tree and the Medjool variety has earned its reputation as the “King of Dates” due to its larger size, superior flavour, consistency and availability. Like other Dates, they are cylindrical in shape but can be up to 2-3 inches in length with a tender, almost meaty flesh giving a naturally sweet toffee like flavour. The whole fruit can be eaten, though there is a solid pit inside which should be discarded or you will crack a tooth!

Dates are harvested late so as to let the natural sugars develop, this gives them their wrinkly and over ripe appearance, but don’t be deceived, they are one of the most luxurious fruits around. The fruit will often have a white flaky substance on the outside which is just the natural sugar crystallising, therefore perfectly delicious to eat.
