Like apples, to which pears are closely related, there are many varieties but only a handful regularly available commercially. Their fine, slightly grainy flesh is much more fragile than apples and unlike most fruit, they improve in flavour after they are picked. Pears ripen from the inside out, so they are best bought underripe and stored carefully at home until they give a little at the base – then you’re ready to go!

William Pears are favoured for their aromatic, moist flesh that when fully ripe, develops a lovely smooth texture and sweet flavour. They can also be happily enjoyed underripe if you prefer your fruit with a little more crunch!
